  • cotton balls
  • animal picture cards (fish)
  • bowl of water
  • small toys or crackers (fish-shaped if available)

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse lesson! Let's start by remembering what we learned yesterday. Yesterday we discovered that God made everything - the light, day, night, sun, and beautiful twinkling stars! Today we're going to learn about something else wonderful that God made - swimming fishies!

πŸ’ Review Question: Can you show me how the stars twinkle in the sky like we learned yesterday?
2Teaching (5 min)

Let's open our Bible and hear what God's Word says about fish. In Genesis 1:20-21, the Bible tells us that 'God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures... God created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed.' That means God made all the fishies! He made big fish and little fish, colorful fish and plain fish. God made fish that swim and splash in the water!

πŸ“Œ Key Talking Points:
  • God made fish to live in the water - they can breathe underwater!
  • Fish come in so many colors - red, blue, yellow, orange, and more!
  • Some fish are tiny like your finger, others are bigger than you!
  • Fish swim by moving their tails back and forth
πŸ’¬ Discussion Questions:
  • What sounds do you think fish make when they swim?
  • Can you move your hand like a fish swimming?
3Activity: Fishy Water Play (6 min)
sensory

Your BibleMouse curriculum includes wonderful sensory activities! We're going to explore what it's like to be a fish swimming in water using our senses of touch and movement.

πŸ“ Instructions:
  1. Place the bowl of water in front of your child and let them gently splash their hands in it, saying 'The fishies swim and splash!'
  2. Show the fish picture cards and let child touch the blue construction paper 'water' while making swimming motions
  3. Put cotton balls in the water to represent bubbles that fish make, let child squish and play with the wet cotton
  4. Practice swimming motions with your whole body - lie on the floor and 'swim' like fish while saying 'God made fishies!'
πŸ”„ Variations:

Simpler: Just focus on splashing hands in water and saying 'fish swim' - keep it very simple with lots of repetition

Challenge: Add counting fish crackers or toys, sort by colors, or make fish sounds while swimming

4Closing (3 min)

What a wonderful time learning about God's fishies! Let's remember that God made fish to swim and splash in the water. He made them in so many beautiful colors and sizes. God is so creative and good!

πŸ“ Review Questions:
  • Who made the fishies?
  • Where do fish like to swim?
πŸ™ Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for making beautiful fish that swim in the water. Help us remember that You made everything! Amen.

Coming up: Tomorrow in our BibleMouse lesson, we'll learn about flying birdies that God made with wings!

Genesis 1:1

β€œGod made everything!”

β€” Genesis 1:1 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Make swimming motions with your arms while saying the verse. Pretend to be a fish swimming while you repeat 'God made everything!' three times together.

Teaching Notes

πŸ“š Background:

At this age, children are naturally curious about animals and love sensory experiences with water. This lesson combines their fascination with sea life and tactile learning. The concept that God intentionally created different animals for different environments is foundational to understanding God's design and creativity.

πŸ’‘ Teaching Tips:
  • Have towels ready for water play - embrace the mess as part of learning!
  • Use lots of sound effects and animated voices to keep attention
  • If child is afraid of water, use just a tiny amount or let them watch you first
πŸ€” Common Struggles:

Some children may get overly excited about water play and lose focus on the lesson content, while others might be hesitant about getting wet

πŸ‘€ Signs of Understanding:

Child making swimming motions, attempting to say 'fish' or 'swim,' showing excitement about water play, and connecting that God made the fish

Extension Activities
